Raising Self-awareness Coaching can be described as a way of raising someone's self awareness and getting them to understand that they can take responsibility for their goals and the way they will reach them. This is a form of empowerment for the client. Coaching takes the form of a dialogue between coach and client, though it is not a therapy. It is very dynamic, being action based, and deals mostly with the future. You are in Control Life coaching is fully under the control of the client - the sessions follow the client's agenda - not mine as the coach. Sometimes, after asking the client's permission, I will make a suggestion, but the client is completely free to ignore this if they wish - it is their choice entirely. I will challenge a client if I feel it is necessary, but it is the client who determines the direction of approach. Goal Setting In order to achieve something, it is helpful to set a SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timely) goal. This is something which coaching can help clients with, by asking questions designed to set the client thinking about their situation, and what they are really aiming to do. During the coaching session the coach is careful to make sure the client fully explores the issue in question, and that their awareness is raised with regard to issues which they had not considered previously but which are in fact relevant. A SMART goal is formulated and then checked during the section when the client's real situation is discussed. If necessary, an adjustment is made to the goal at this point, so that the goal has been adequately defined, and is something which inspires the client. Total Support As a life coach, I totally support my clients, and truly believe that they will succeed in whatever they really want to accomplish. In helping my clients to develop a more positive outlook, I will assist them in finding out what is truly important to them. Together we can explore values, and help them break free from any limiting beliefs which may be holding them back from achieving their aims. Confidentiality Coaching involves total confidentiality, together with non judgemental active listening - or perhaps more accurately "hearing". Many people listen, but how many people you speak to in your daily life really "hear" you?
